Search intent is the goal behind a search query: what the person actually wants to find, learn or do. Queries are often grouped as informational, navigational, commercial and transactional, and each needs a different kind of page. A page that does not match the intent of a query rarely ranks well for it, however well optimized it is. Looking at the pages that already rank is the quickest way to understand the intent.
